Florida Hate Group Complains Target Wants To Prevent LGBT Suicides

MTV's Teen Nick channel is running a PSA from the Trevor Project. And since God's Gentle People want to see gay kids dead, they are complaining.
Upon discovering that Target Corporation is the main advertiser during Degrassi, the Florida Family Association -- which describes that program as "shameful" -- prepared an e-mail for the public to send to the CEO and other officials of the retail chain. "They are openly recruiting teens and children to become 'gay' on a program that also promotes the transgender and homosexual lifestyle," laments David Caton, executive director of the pro-family group. "We are encouraging people to contact Target to let them know that they don't appreciate Target's ads helping to subsidize this promo on the Teen Nick show, Degrassi," he adds.

First of all, get a dictionary because the show is in no way recruiting new members for the GLBT community. The show simply exposes teenagers to real life situations that will happen in school because someone will eventually know someone who's either gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, or just plain curious. Adolescents may do what they will. If they find that they are cool with that kind of a situation, more power to them. If one's adolescent son and/or daughter comes out of the closet, it's more likely that it wasn't because he or she was recruited by a fictional, scripted television show. Let's face it, homosexuality is not a choice. He or she was just already homosexual and found the courage to come out because a storyline in the show. Or he or she really is going through a phase where they are unsure about whether or not they are or aren't and they feel they need to try it out to be completely sure about their feelings. It's completely natural. Change the channel if this show is so offensive. By the way, MTV's Skins makes Degrassi look like Christian-approved, Sunday Television for the whole family. Watch that and then we'll discuss.

Secondly, the fact that Target is placing ads in commercial time slots in this show doesn't necessarily mean that they support every crazy shenanigan that the teenagers get themselves into on this fictional, scripted television show. It is more likely that Target may or may not (I'm not a spokesperson for Target) be just advertising to one of the demographics with the largest disposable incomes AKA the preteens/adolescents. This demographic is either getting an allowance from mommy and daddy, has a babysitting job, or (for older adolescents) has an actual job with no bills or actual debt to worry over. That money has to go somewhere and for some preteens and adolescents, the bank isn't necessarily the first place the comes to mind. So Target places an ad in a commercial time slot where there will most likely be preteens and adolescents watching to draw this demographic into the stores to spend money. Target may or may not (again I'm no spokesperson for the company) also be using this show as a platform to show the GLBT demographic (the other demographic with one of the highest disposable incomes) that Target is sorry for what I like to call the Donation Debacle. If it is, it's a good start in creating good PR for the company.

So, I was watching "Grey's Anatomy" (I LOVE that show) when Callie's father comes in to "pray the gay away" and tells her that if she doesn't change her ways, she'll go to hell. He has index cards filled out with verses of the Bible like "Leviticus: Thou shalt not lie with a man as one would lies with a female…" and so on and so forth.

What I loved, loved, loved about this was that Callie was ready and fired back using Bible verses to justify her homosexuality. I'm posting what she said and hopefully this will help someone someday.

Smarting from GLAAD's "F" rating over their lack of LGBT characters, a SyFy Channel vice president has revealed that several characters in two new series will be gay.

"On Stargate Universe, one of the main female characters, we discover, is a lesbian and has a wife at home. It's a pretty important facet of who that character is," he says. ER alum Ming-Na plays intergalactic diplomat Camille Wray, while 24's Reiko Aylesworth recurs as her wife. Similarly the Galactica prequel spin-off Caprica has at least two main characters depicted as being in gay relationships. "[One] is a 'goodfella'-type, and we discover in a nonchalant way that he is gay, with a husband," Stern says. "It was very interesting to me to take what is traditionally a very heterosexual role in an organization that we think of as being extremely homophobic, and put a gay character in that world in a very normalized way." The other aformentioned Caprica character is part of a communal marriage featuring "heterosexual as well as homosexual couplings." In both the SGU and Caprica examples, the character's sexuality is merely one facet of who they are, says Stern.

Stern says the characters' gayness will be "naturalistic," with no commentary necessary about their sexuality.

Yes, couples in their 90s still argue occasionally. This is how it went recently for Caroline Leto and Venera Magazzu as they sipped lemonade on their couch in Dania Beach: "We're not going to have a party," said Magazzu, 97, insisting they are too old for such things. "Oh, yes we are," responded Leto, 96, who noted the two can still polka. "This is a big one." Indeed. A party celebrating 70 years together is a big deal for any pair. But a celebration of this couple's love takes on special meaning, considering they had to keep silent about it for decades. "You just couldn't tell everyone we were lovers," said Leto. "You tell people we're friends, and some thought we were sisters." Leto and Magazzu downplay their pioneering role in the gay and lesbian community. But many of their friends and relatives talk it up anyway, marveling at how their love was able to transcend a lifetime's worth of obstacles. To mark their Aug. 17 milestone, members of Etz Chaim, a gay and lesbian congregation in Wilton Manors, are planning a party. They hope Leto and Magazzu will attend and show everyone how to do the polka.

The pair became domestic partners in NYC in 1996. In 2001 they cowrote a self-published book titled An Unadulterated Story: Young and Gay at 90.

Ten Fun Facts for Twilighters!

Most of us were not fortunate enough to go and see the cast of New Moon in person at Comic-Con this year. It was a shame, especially considering that Rob Pattinson decided to shower for the occasion!

For those of us who were stuck at home while all the madness went down, we came across of list of fun facts compiled about the movies and its stars from people who got to go to Comic-Con.

Here's what we got:

1. The production company, Summit Entertainment, knows you Twilight fans live for the BEEF! CLICK HERE to see what we mean.

2. Most of the dialogue in New Moon was taken straight from the pages of the novel. (No more of this "spider-monkey" crap!)

3. Taylor Lautner stands tall as the flick's media golden boy. Unlike R-Patz and K-Stew, he knows how to work the press and remains charming answering the same mundane questions over and over and over and….

4. Kristen Stewart knows Bella is a whack job in this movie. Whether she found a way to express any kind of emotion to showcase this is yet to be seen.

5. K-Stew also is still a tool when it comes to interviews. When asked how her life is different from last year's Comic-Con, she replied: "I cut my hair off." Thanks for the enlightening contribution!

6. Breaking up is hard to do, but for the Twilight cast, it's their favorite scenes to act in. The Holy Trinity of Twilight all agreed that their favorite scenes were ones in which they broke up or left another character. R-Patz had said: "I think my breakup scene was my favorite scene. I mean, hopefully it'll come off as having quite a few more levels than the relationship in Twilight. It was interesting. It was like a five page long dialogue scene. That didn't happen at all in the first one and it's quite an interesting little moment. It completely bypasses all the supernatural elements of the story as well, which I found quite interesting."

7. K-Stew can't wait to [spoiler alert, if you haven't read the books] be knocked up with a baby vamp in the final movie, Breaking Dawn. In addition, R-Patz can't wait to perform the Cesarian!

8. The director, Chris Weitz, is watching you watching the trailer. If you want him to stop, cease putting up Youtube videos in which you record your reactions to the trailer.

9. Be glad you staid home if you are a "normal" fan, because thousands upon thousands of screaming Twilighters filled the streets up to two full days before the Comic-Con even started just to get inside.

10. Real geeks hate Twilight and they want you all to never to come to Comic-Con again as evident by the signs many people were carrying saying "Twilight Ruined Comic-Con".

Crafted to replicate the appearance of the synthetic blood beverage preferred by the undead in the series, the real-life drink will also be called Tru Blood. "From its first season, fans have been enamored with the show and have expressed a keen interest in the Tru Blood beverage," added James Costos, vice president of licensing and retail at HBO. "We're extremely excited to be able to bring this original drink to life." Allan Ball, creator and executive producer of the series, announced the launch of the bottles at the San Diego Comic-Con convention and joked that the drink was a mixture of "wine, vodka, Vicodin, Viagra and Ecstasy" and that it was "completely illegal."

The preferred synthetic blood drink of integrated vampires in HBO's Alan Ball series True Blood, is coming to a store near you in September:

Washington (State) H8ters Don't Want Their Names Published

Well, too bad! Those kinds of things are rightfully open for the public as is any other petition that is meant to change/abolish/alter state law. If gays have to suffer because their names have been published in a petition, then the H8ters have to suffer too!

Protect Families Washington is suing the state to prevent the publication of the names of people who signed the Referendum 71 petition, which would overturn the state's brand-new domestic partners law. Washington's secretary of state says the request will be heard in court, but that the haters shouldn't hold their breath.

U.S. District Judge Benjamin Settle is hearing the request for a temporary restraining order at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Tacoma. The state will not resist the request, pending a full hearing on the merits of the case. Nick Handy, state elections director, said Wednesday, “Referendum petitions become public records under the law once they have been turned over to us by sponsors. Our consistent practice has been to make these available upon public request. By early next week we will be in a position to make these available, and absent a court order, our intent has been to respond to public records requests in a timely way.”

State officials are in the process of verifying the 135,000 signatures submitted. There is a good chance that enough of them will be judged invalid and the referendum drive will fail. In either case, the names should be made public, of course.

HIV Outbreak In Porn Industry Causes Concern, Controversy

Yikes! What a mess!

Since the news of one confirmed case of HIV in the porn industry, it now turns out that there are at least 16 other adult performers with the disease, causing concern for L.A. County health officials and AIDS activists.

The Division of Occupational Safety and Health has found the Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation (AIM) - which tests performers for STDs - resistant to full disclosure, but AIM insists that they are likewise limited by laws that protect patient and employer rights.

While it is not known who the infected actress is, it is known that she slept with a male performer and her boyfriend since testing positive for HIV, and those men then had sex with another 6 partners. The actor is now under work quarantine and everyone else has been alerted and offered testing. So far, no one who is known to have had sexual contact with the woman has tested positive.

Because the additional 16 cases have not been investigated by the government, it is unknown whether the performers contracted the disease at work or elsewhere.

The last major HIV outbreak occurred in 2004, when 5 porn performers tested positive for the disease, shutting down the industry for a month.

While state labor codes do require the use of personal protective equipment against blood or bodily fluids in the work place, no law specifically requires the use of condoms in porn. When the matter has come up (pardon the pun), no one would back such legislation, fearing that condom requirements would push porn into more dangerous underground realms.

What we want to know is what's so un-sexy about being safe?

Condoms and regular testing are part of healthy, responsible sexual behavior.

Poolside Flatbreads

for dough:
1 3/4 c. high gluten flour
3/8 c. warm water (105 - 110 degrees)
1 1/2 tsp vegetable oil
3/4 tsp active dry yeast
3/4 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt

for sauce:
1 (15oz) can of organic whole tomatoes
1 Tbsp organic tomato paste
1 small clove garlic, pressed or finely minced
1/2 tsp dried oregano
1 pinch dried thyme
salt and ground black pepper to taste

1 c. mozzarella, shredded
1 c. roast pork, shredded
1/4 c. fresh basil, chiffonade

Directions:
-In bowl of stand mixer, combine warm water, yeast and sugar.
-Let yeast begin to foam, about 5 minutes, add oil, and salt and turn mixer, fitted with dough hook, on at low speed.
-Slowly add flour to mixture until combined and stiff ball forms, about 3 minutes.
-Turn mixer off as soon as stiff ball forms (do not knead this dough).
-Turn dough out into large greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap and a kitchen towel and place into fridge.
-Let dough rise for 24 hours prior to use (this step is very important)

-In bowl of blender, combine canned tomatoes and paste and blend just until smooth.
-Place tomatoes into large glass bowl with garlic, oregano, thyme, salt and pepper and set aside.
-Place baking stone on grill (or in oven) and preheat to 500 degrees for at least 30 minutes.
-Turn dough out onto lightly floured surface and divide dough.
-Roll each piece of dough into very thin, 8 inch rounds on pieces of parchment paper.
-Dock the crust (poking holes in it so large bubbles do not form).
-Spoon and spread some pomodoro sauce on the crust, sprinkle some mozzarella and add pork.
-Place pizzas on parchment directly to the pizza stone, using a pizza peel.
-Close grill (or oven door) and cook until crust is just turning golden brown and crisp, about 10-15 minutes, depending on thickness.
-Remove pizzas from grill, place on wire rack to cool for at least 5 minutes to crisp.
-Add fresh basil to top, slice and serve warm.

Makes about 3 flatbreads

Evangelical Radio Host: "I'm Praying For The Death Of President Obama"

Another whackjob Christianist is in the news. Speaking to Fox News Radio, loony evangelical radio host Pastor Wiley Drake said the he is praying for the death of President Obama. (Audio below.)

Pastor Wiley Drake prayed that abortionist George Tiller's wife would become a widow. Tiller is now dead. Drake claims that his death is an answer to imprecatory prayer. Now he is praying an imprecatory prayer for the death of our president. Imprecatory Psalms are psalms that contain curses or prayers for the judgment of a nation's enemies, invoking evil upon them. Psalms 7, 35, 55, 58, 59, 69, 79, 109, 137 and 139 are ones that Drake finds his prayer material in. Drake repeats words from the book of Psalms in his imprecatory prayers such as Psalm 109:9 where it is written "May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow." This is what he prayed for the late-term abortionist before he was murdered. He says that it is our Christian duty to pray along these vengeful and vindictive lines for religious, political, and personal reasons when other means for change have been exhausted.

Last August, Drake prayed for the deaths of the leaders of Americans For Separation of Church and State. In fact, he issued a press release calling for their deaths and Christian News Wire published it. Pastor Drake, Dr. Tiller's killer, the Holocaust Museum shooter...where is this all going?

J&K+8 Has Competition!

There's some new kids on the block!

Jon and Kate Gosselin will soon face some competition. WE TV is ready to premiere their latest show, Raising Sextuplets.

And as the name suggests, the show will center around Bryan and Jenny Masche and their sextuplets, who just turned.

The show premiered yesterday, but already the Masche's are saying it's nothing like Jon & Kate's circus. In fact, they're using J&K as an example of what not to become.

Jenny reveals in a new interview, "I'm like, 'Oh my gosh, that's scary. How can we protect our family and do this and have fun without anything negative happening?"

Adding, "I think we're both wise enough to learn from those mistakes [of the Gosselins], instead of thinking, 'Well, that would never happen to us."

The couple insists there will be some "ground rules", though. Such as the show will film five days a month and more importantly, if one of them wants to quit, they'll end the show.

Bryan adds, "[Jon & Kate Plus 8] has really changed who those people are. It went from being a show about people who have sextuplets and twins to a show about people who have a show. Neither of them even work anymore."

And Bryan and Jenny say they both work and intend on keeping their jobs. Bryan's a pharmaceutical salesman and Jenny works as a physician's assistant in an ER.

Prison Segregated Lesbian Inmates

The largest women’s prison in Virginia segregated dozens of lesbian inmates and straight women who looked masculine from the rest of the population, inmates and corrections officers told the Associated Press. They say that what began as an effort to break up couples and stop sexual activity at the Fluvanna Correctional Center in Troy turned into a practice of sending women to a until called the “butch wing” based on their appearance.

Women sent to wing 5D -- also called the “little boys wing,” “locker room wing” and “studs wing” -- told the AP they were verbally harassed by staff there, and taken to the cafeteria first or last to keep them separated from other inmates. Three guards confirmed the charges.

Former guard William Drumheller said that manager Timothy Back started the practice, which lasted for over one year, as a way to separate couples. The 60-inmate wing eventually filled with women targeted because of their appearance, such as short hair or loose-fitting clothes.

"I heard him say, 'We're going to break up some of these relationships, start a boys wing, and we're going to take all these studs and put them together and see how they like looking at nothing but each other all day instead of their girlfriends,'" Drumheller said.

Warden Barbara Wheeler denied that housing decisions were ever made based on sexual orientation or appearance. The practice stopped recently after the AP questioned it.

The NYT wonders if Sacha Baron Cohen's upcoming film Bruno will amuse or outrage:

"Mr. Baron Cohen declined to be interviewed for this article, as did Larry Charles, who directed the film (as well as 'Borat'). Universal also declined to make a production executive available for an interview, providing the following statement instead:

'‘Brüno’ uses provocative comedy to powerfully shed light on the absurdity of many kinds of intolerance and ignorance, including homophobia. By placing himself in radical and risky situations, Sacha Baron Cohen forces both the people Brüno meets and the audience itself to challenge their own stereotypes, preconceptions and discomforts. While any work that dares to address relevant cultural sensitivities might be misinterpreted by some or offend others, we believe the overwhelming majority of the audience will understand and appreciate the film’s inarguably positive intentions.

"The studio has twice shown unfinished versions of 'Brüno' to the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and said that test audiences have come away with a clear understanding of the film’s positive social message. Universal also said that it screened 20 minutes of unedited footage at a Texas film festival this year, and that blog coverage was overwhelmingly upbeat."

The Human Rights Campaign feels a disclaimer should run before the film: "We strongly feel that Sacha Baron Cohen and Universal Pictures have a responsibility to remind the viewing public right there in the theater that this is intended to expose homophobia."

Of course, that would be a little like telling people before Friday the 13th that they're supposed to be scared.
